CORK CUP 2011 Report

Wilton Utd ACADEMY were proudly represented by two teams in the 2011 Cork Cup held at the CIT grounds over the June bank holiday weekend. Both teams performed extremely well, with success just within their grasp. It was a great occasion which the players visibly enjoyed and each & every one was a credit to their parents, their coaches and to Wilton United.

Well done everyone, the future is promising !

==========================================================================================================================
Under 9's Report

The U9's were absolutely fabulous over the entire 2 days, perhaps the 'Team of the tournament' - a bold statement however I'm sure, not many would disagree. They went from strength to strength right through the group stages, winnings all 5 games convincingly and without conceding a goal. This qualified them for the main CUP semi-final against Ringmahon Rangers and they continued there in style, with another convincing 4:0 victory. Up next was Woodlawn from Dublin in the FINAL. Heartbreak followed however - a slow start allowed the opposition take 1:0 lead into halt time. Wilton responded well in the second half, however against the run of play Woodlawn doubled their lead. This blow, kicked Wilton into life (a sign of true character and team spirit) and they quickly score to get back into contention. For the next 7 minutes of a 12 minute 2nd half period, Wilton played their Dublin opponents off the park with this dominance resulting in one chance after another being created, however the woodwork and some fine goalkeeping prevented that vital equaliser being scored. Time eventually ran out and the U9 Cork Cup travelled to Dublin.
Well done everyone, treasure the memories and NOTE - the team's future is very bright!

Individual Highlights:

Cathal Hynes: Superb throughout and invaluable to the team. Remember his fantastic top corner save against Kinsale?

Liam O'Driscoll: His determination and drive - you can't buy that ! Instrumental to our clean sheet up to the final.

Shane Minihane: His reading of the game and his anticipation of danger and the speed to cut it. Also, Instrumental to our clean sheet up to the final.

Dara O'Sullivan: Scorer of the most important goal of the competition, the only goal of the game vs. Springfield which proved to be the turning point for the team. This 2nd victory gave the team the BELIEF needed to produced the subsequent outstanding performances.

Daniel Harte: Superb tackling (despite an injured knee) throughout which became infectious right through the team.

Sean Murphy: The ' 2 goal ' hero in the game against Temple Utd.

Joseph Higgins: His best central midfield displays of the season and his 'character filled' attempts for an equaliser in the Final.

Thomas White: A superb 'Hat Trick' against defending champions Kinsale Utd and a sublime & composed long range strike, to the top left hand corner of the net against Ringmahon in the semi's - a contender for goal of the tournament.

Jamie O'Sullivan: His work rate, drive and self belief throughout, his goal in the final that brought Wilton back into contention and Jamie's awesome goal against Temple - the other contender for goal of the tournament.

Eoghan Brown: His headed goal in the opening game against Lakewood - brave and beautiful, following a great cross from the right flank.

========================================================================================================================

Under 8's Report

The under 8's, together with some U7's had a great tournament reaching the Challenge Cup final, only to lose out on penalties, at sudden death stage, to Ringmahon Rangers. A special mention must go to the Eoghan O'Toole who stepped up to manage team at the last moment. He did a great job, his best in difficult circumstances considering the number of players on the panel. To those who did not get as much game time as normal, we'll make it up to you next year. It would be unfair to single out specific players as all did extremely well. Combine this with the fact that there were some strong players unavailable fort the event, it's clear that this age group has a very promising future.

Well done everyone!

Under 9 Wilton Wolves: Away to Corinthians
============================
============================

This game was a heart breaker! A case of, so close & yet so far, as we lost out again, by a single goal. Even the Corinthians coaches afterwards, felt very fortunate to have collected all 3 points. Nevertheless, as has been said many times before 'GOALS WIN YOU GAMES' and on the night, we didn't create as many good opportunities as normal and didn't take the chances that we did create. Something to remember and to work on!

Period 1: The 1st period was very evenly contested. Corinthians seemed to have a 'one game plan' which was to create space and 1 on 1 situations up front, for their star forward to capitalise on. However, Liam O'Driscoll and Jamie O'Sullivan were wise to their strategy and defended such situations brilliantly and on one of the very few occasions their plan worked, Cathal Hynes pulled off a great save to deny Corinthians. Wilton were playing the better football, with everyone from Sean, Daniel and Thomas in midfield and Eoghan and Dara up front, passing and combining well. Chances were however hard to come by, in no small part down to a new face in the Corinthians defence - where did he suddenly come from?. Towards the end of this period, Corinthians broke the deadlock. Wilton lost possession in the centre of the field and their star striker latch on to a through ball and gave Cathal no chance to save, as he buried it low into the far corner.

Period 2: Morgan Sheehan, who had answered a late call up to the team, was introduced in this period and contributed very well out on the right wing, feeding some great ball up the line for Thomas to feed off. Again, playing the greater football, Wilton pressed hard for the equaliser. Chances were scarce however Wilton certainly had the better of them. On one occasion, Jamie made a mesmerising run through the Corinthians team which Corinthians just manage to defence before Jamie applied the clinical finish. On another occasion, Thomas White produced the pass of the game, a pin-point floating pass over the Corinthians defence and into the path of the ongoing running Sean Murphy. Sean's excellent volley however, agonisingly sailed just over the Corinthians Crossbar. Still 1:0 to the home team.

Period 3. Spirited and determined, Wilton started the 3rd period as they finished the 2nd. The early half chances again fell to Wilton, the most notable being Thomas's left foot volley which hit the crossbar. Corinthians, while always competitive and always dangerous on the counter attack didn't create many chances themselves. Sean and Dara O'Sullivan now in defence was proving effective, along side the ever present and reliable Liam O'Driscoll. It was as this stage that Corinthians struck again, created out of nothing and it must be said, it was a beauty. Adam, who was always trying to tee up long range shots for himself, eventual did so, this time on his weaker foot, despite the determined efforts of both Liam and Jamie. He let fly and the ball sailed into the top right hand corner of Wilton's goal. This sickening blow which would have finished off a lesser team but not 'The Wolves'. They bounced back immediately, continued to pressurise the Corinthians defence and were quickly rewarded with a goal, by Morgan Sheehan to set up a grand finale. With time running out, Wilton fought hard and finished the stronger and were almost rewarded at the death. In a crowded Corinthian's goal mouth, following some good interplay by both Thomas and Daniel Harte, the ball fell within inches of Thomas connecting with a close range tap in, however a Corinthians toe agonisingly got there first and cleared for a corner kick. Corinthian 2: Wilton 1, at the end.

Well done again, everyone. There were so many positives to build on, going forward and no more so than your response to going 2 goals down. As a result, the 'Man of the Match' award goes to the Wilton Wolves (all 9 players).
Roll on the Cork Cup - we'll give it a go, see what happens and have FUN!

U10 League 1: Leeside Knockraha 4 Wilton 1
=============================
=============================

On Friday 27th May, Wilton made the journey to Little Island to play Leeside Knochraha in this U10 League 1 fixture. As with all games this season, the opposition were well organised and strong, the focus of this team being two strong wingers in Forde and Murphy.

Wilton played very well in the first period but conceded an early goal when Leeside’s right winger Murphy worked his way through the Wilton defence to put the home side ahead. Wilton responded well and equalised when Sammy Dooley fired in a strong shot that the opposing goalkeeper could not keep out. Sammy was well supported by Jack Doherty up front and the midfield of Mark Traynor, James Scally and Ben Gayer were holding their own despite the quality of the opposition. The back line of Tiernan Butler, Shane Murphy and William O’Connor were solid resulting in a 1-1 score line at the end of the first period.

Wilton continued to play well in the second period but two unanswered goals probably saw the game slip away from us. The first goal came from their left wing when again the winger Forde beat a number of our players to set up the goal. Their second goal came when their right winger Murphy did the damage. The opposition also missed a penalty in this period, which was harshly awarded against us. 3-1 at the end of period 2.

The final period was again a closely fought encounter, a goal from their winger Murphy (noticing the trend?!) being the only score. Wilton again displayed their never give up spirit and had a number of good shots on target that were saved by the opposing goalkeeper. In fact this was more than matched by our man in goal; Ciaran O’Driscoll who pulled off a number of fantastic saves, a double save near the end requiring him to go full stretch to the first shot and react quickly to the rebound. Sammy Dooley & Cillian McNamara were doing some good work up front and at the back Eoin Murphy was beginning to get the better of the danger man on their left wing.

4-1 was the final score but this was a good match for us, where Wilton continued their progress - the result (and play) was a significant improvement from the game earlier in the season when we played the same opposition in an eleven a side match. Defending as a unit, minimising the space between the defensive and midfield lines to make life more difficult for the opposition will all be worked on in training now that we stopped conceding goals from corners!

Man of the Match this week goes to Ciaran O’Driscoll in goal for some fantastic saves and safe handling all evening. Well deserved and again, well done to all who played!

Under 9 Wilton Wolves: Home to Lakewood
============================
============================

The Wolves returned to winning ways in a closely contested home game against local rivals Lakewood.

Period 1.

Wilton were severely short of players on the night and must thank Andrew O'Connor for answering a very late call up. Yet it was Andrew who thanked the Wolves by way of two first period goals. The determination of every player, to firstly win possession of the ball and then pass & move, resulted in Wilton dominating possession for most of the 1st period and Andrew's 2 goals were just rewards for the team's combined effort. Tirek, Lakewood's danger man upfront, looked very threatening on the counter-attack however for the most part, he was well marshalled by both Shane Minihane and Joseph Higgins in defence. He made the breakthrough on a few occasions to be denied by brilliant 'shot stopping' saves from the 'on form' Cathal Hynes. Wilton's luck however eventually ran out and he punished Wilton, leaving it 2:1 to the home team at the interval.

Period 2.

The pattern to the 2nd period was very similar to the 1st, however with the Wilton players starting to tire somewhat (no subs) Lakewood enjoyed greater possession and posed a greater threat than they did in the 1st period. Joseph Higgins and Shane proved even more effective in the second period as their new partnership settled in. Daniel Harte 'Mr Consistent' broke down some promising Lakewood attacks and he distributed some good ball to both Jamie O'Sullivan and Thomas White, on both flanks. Despite their attacking mite and combination play, it was Lakewood who scored the only goal to level the scores at the end of the 2nd period.

Period 3.

At the interval, you could tell the Wilton players knew the were they better team and knew THEY had to win, this one! That team spirit and belief shone through in this period, tiredness besides. Every ball was contested for, with heart and courage. That determination was reflected in two notable instances, in the closing stages of the game. The first being Thomas White's response to the blood injury he sustained and the subsequent cheer from the home fans (well, the Wilton Mum's) and the 2nd by Jamie O'Sullivan in the dying minutes of the game which alone, earns him 'Man of the Match'. With minutes remaining and the teams level, Lakewood's Tirek made another break towards the Wilton goal. Recognising the danger and taking the responsibility on himself, Jamie chased him down and made a goal saving tackle. From the resultant corner, Wilton broke free and descended on the Lakewood goal and who was there on Thomas's shoulder to receive a pass and score the winner, but Jamie.

A great team performance - the best to date. Well done everyone.

Under 10 Wilton Wonders: Away to Corinthians
==============================
==============================

The Wonders were certainly WONDERFUL away to Corinthians, winning handsomely by 8 goals to 4, a score line that actually flattered our hosts.

Period 1: Corinthians entertained us on their NO. 1 pitch and it must be mentioned that the grass 'carpet like' surface was an absolute joy to play on. No wonder the 'premiership' professionals are so good! The surface and the full size pitch suited Wilton very well, with the likes of Maciek Zegadlo and Jamie O'Sullivan using their pace and dribbling skills to create time & space on the ball. This quality possession wasn't wasted and within 5 minutes Wilton were two goals to the good. Jamie scoring both, following some excellent passing movements involving our front man, Dara O'Sullivan, Jack Long in midfield and the aforementioned Maciek. Wilton kept up the pressure on their opponents, lead by the inspired Jack Long. His all round performance was a revelation - aggressive tackling, passing, tracking back and all capped off with his 1st goal of the season, following 2 earlier attempts, earns Jack the 'Man of the Match' award. Wilton 3:0 up!

Period 2: Wilton were as relentless in the 2nd period and bombarded the Corinthians goalkeeper with goal bound efforts however he was well able, making save after save for his team. The introduction of Thomas White in this period added further pace and penetration up front creating opportunities for players around him. The only goal of this period came from such a situation. Thomas turned his marker following an incisive pass from Robert Murphy, made it to the end line and squared the ball to the on rushing Luis Halligan, who calmly passed the ball into the oppositions net. Corinthians throughout the first 2 periods were not without occasional threat themselves however the now 'dynamic central defensive duo' of Gearoid Murphy and Oran O'Sullivan who made defending look easy at times, ably supported by Shane Foley and Sean Murphy in the full back positions, cut out any danger as soon as it arose. 4:1 up now!

Period 3: Some formation changes by the coach, a determined fight back by Corinthians and lack of concentration by some Wilton players, all resulted in a very entertaining end to end 3 period. Wilton initially made it 5: 1 with a well taken goal by Sean Murphy, who was enjoying and excelling in the time and space a full size pitch can afford you, if your ball control is good. Some loose defending (or absent goal hungry defenders!) allowed Corinthians breakthrough on a few occasions, 2 of which resulted in goals while Tom Murphy (who had his quietist day so far) saved some others. Following a few harsh words, Wilton composed themselves and replied with 3 of their own, 2 from Thomas White and a beauty from Dara O'Sullivan. Dara controlled a forward pass by Shane Foley, who was now playing a blinder at right back, teed up a shot on his right foot and from 15 yards struck it sweetly off the underside of the crossbar before crossing the goal line. Dara's being waiting a while for one of those!

Well done everyone - the result was great however the continual improvement in both the teams performance and individual performances, is even better!

==============================
U10 League 1: Castleview 2 Wilton Warriors 1
==============================
==============================

On Sunday, 22nd May, Wilton travelled away to Castleview for this League 1 fixture. Wilton were depleted in numbers due to injuries and late withdrawals but special mention must go to Eoin Murphy for playing the first period with a very sore ankle while we awaited for reinforcements to arrive (i.e. Sammy!).

Wilton opened brightly playing against the wind and played some good football in the middle of the park. Our defence was solid and most of the early chances fell to Wilton with Jack Doherty getting on the end of some good moves. Just before the break Castleview scored from an in swinging corner (assisted by the wind) which was headed home. 1-0 down at the break but playing with the wind in period 2.

Wilton dominated period 2 again playing some good football in the middle of the field with Mark Traynor, James Scally and Ben Gayer in good form. The defence of Tiernan Butler, Cian Spicer and William O’Connor were giving nothing away (such that goalkeeper Ciaran O’Driscoll was cold at the interval!). Up front Sammy Dooley & Jack Doherty were having a good number of shots on target. The score remained 1-0 at the end of Period 2.

Playing against a strong wind in the last period, 1 goal down, this team responded magnificently (as they always do in these circumstances). The quality of football was some of the best played all season, the work rate across all 9 players was exemplary and this created further chances for Wilton. Ben Gayer & Sammy Dooley were working well on the left and this link up play had Sammy firing into the side netting after 5 minutes. Mark Traynor and Tiernan Butler were combining well on the right wing and this was creating further chances for the Warriors while James Scally was working tirelessly in midfield winning some great ball. Cian Spicer was in control at the back, as he has done for the last few games. Then halfway through the period it happened! Ben Gayer fought hard to win a ball, sent it up the line to Sammy Dooley; the ball ultimately sent across to Mark Traynor who hit an unstoppable shot to the top left corner of the net. 1-1 and no more than the team deserved for this performance.
Then, in a rare Castleview attack towards the end of the period, they won a corner. The first effort was headed out by James Scally, but their second corner was scored in an exact replica of the first goal.
So we owned the ball, played good football, scored a great goal but conceded 2 goals from corner kicks and lost the match – very unfortunate and not what the lads deserved from this performance. Still, the coaches can take a lot from this game and have noted defending corners as an area to work on! No player could be faulted in any way after this performance.

Man of the Match this week could be any of the 10 who played (including Eoin), but this weeks award goes to Tiernan Butler, for the work rate, tenacity, and never give-up approach all through the game. Well done to all!

==============================
==============================
Under 10 League 1: Wilton Warriors 1; Mallow 1
==============================
==============================

Wilton hosted Mallow on Sunday, May 15th on a glorious evening for football. This was a very exciting game, played with great spirit (and skill!) as evidenced by the loud round of applause both sets of players received at the final whistle.

The first period was only 5 minutes old when Wilton suffered the loss of striker Kevin Jansson with an ankle injury and he could play no further part in this game (we wish Kevin a speedy recovery). Both sets of teams defended well in this period and Wilton’s defence of William O’Connor, Cian Spicer & Eoghan Mathers were very solid. No goal to either team at the break but what an improvement from the first period last week!

The second period saw James Scally playing up front and creating all sorts of problems for the Mallow defence. Tiernan Butler was working tirelessly in midfield ably supported by Ben Gayer & Maciek Zegadlo. Midway through this period Jack Doherty made a great run through the Mallow defence and passed the ball to Tiernan Butler who shot to the net. Just before the break Ciaran O’Driscoll had to be alert and show quick reactions in the Wilton goal from a corner to keep the score at 1-0.

The final period saw few chances going to either team but this was a very controlled and composed performance by Wilton. Oran O’Sullivan and Mark Traynor were playing very well on the right wing and constantly working to set up a platform for our strikers. Elsewhere, the team continued to defend well, work for each other and play some very good football. Just when victory was appearing in the sight a good Mallow move down our left wing resulted in a goal to level the scores at 1-1.

This was a better performance from Wilton and the defending from corners & throw-ins was much improved thereby minimising the chances we gave to Mallow and consequently less goals conceded.
Man of the Match contenders this week are Cian Spicer for another great game in the heart of defence, William O’Connor for playing in both full back positions so well, James Scally & Tiernan Butler for their work rate but this week’s award goes to Jack Doherty for his incisive break that split the Mallow defence and set up our goal (after all goals win games!).
Well done to all who played!

Sunday 15th May
Under 8 Wilton Wrestlers: Home to Ballinhassig.
===============================
===============================

Despite Wiltons best efforts Ballinhassig 's 1st team were too strong for our boys in this home game. The main damage was done in the 1st period, as Ballinhassig were 3 - 0 up within the first 5 minutes despite the best efforts of the entire Wilton squad.
Wilton's performance greatly improved in the more competitive second and third periods. Rian Kelleher and Jack Olden worked very hard in midfield and Daniel Delee proved very effective in defence. David Henry worked tirelessly up front as did James O'Connell in defence.
Wilton rallied strongly in the third period and their spirited comeback attempt was rewarded with a fine goal from Jack Olden, right at the death. Indeed, they could have had a second goal in this final period had Marton Wiegandt 's well struck penalty attempt, not been saved by Ballinhassig's goalkeeper.

=======================================
U10 Wilton Wonders: Home to Corinthians - Sunday 8th June
=======================================
=======================================

Wilton succumbed to a strong Corinthians side in their 3rd meeting of the season but the eventual score line of 1:5 somewhat flattered our guests.

Period 1: This period was very evenly balanced with both sides giving all and both, up for the battle. The return of David Nwokoye, making his debut in the league, added steel to Wilton's midfield, complimenting the finer skills of his ever improving centre midfield partner, Maciek Zegadlo. Jack Dunne, who had impressed at training the previous Thursday, was having a great game up front, feeding off the midfield duo and on a few occasions almost broke through the Corinthians defence. Not for the first time this season however, it was the opposition who got the initial break with a fine goal and they took a 1 goal lead into the 1st break.

Period 2: The 2nd period mirrored the 1st in almost every respect with Corinthians again scoring the only gaol of a evenly contested period, to take a two goal advantage. Luis Halligan was introduced to midfield during this period and demonstrated to all, his great control and deft touches. Man of the Match, Shane Foley was likewise introduced and made an immediate impact at left back. He broke up many an attack, with his controlled tackling through focus on the ball rather than the man and in addition, once in possession cleared the ball from defence with purpose and effect - something which we've noticed needs work on, by many players across many age groups.

Period 3: Formation changes in this period took too long to settle in and before we knew, 3 quick goals by Corinthians finished Wilton off or almost. The break up of the defensive duo of Oran O'Sullivan and Gearoid Murphy, who had been mighty in the earlier periods effected the team most, as did the break up of the mighty midfield duo of David and Maciek. After some belated positional changes, Wilton got back on track and finished the game much the stronger team however with only 1 goal to show for their spirited fight to the end. However, What a GOAL!. Robert Murphy, who had threatened a few times in the previous game, played a defence splitting one-two with Cian Ahern and broke through on goal. Robert won the race to the ball, just, with the Corinthians goal keeper and calmly & bravely slotted a left foot shot under the advancing goalkeeper. Nice way to end and a just reward to all, for playing 'til the final whistle.

Better luck next time, lads. Away to Carrigtwohill, I think!

====================================
====================================
U10 League 1: Wilton Warriors 0 : Carrigaline Uninted 5
====================================
====================================

On Sunday 8th, Wilton Warriors faced Carrigaline United at home. Carrigaline are known to be one of the better teams in Cork and whether this had an impact on our players or not, Wilton went out and played a very poor 15 minutes of football in the first period when compared to previous matches. 3 goals were conceded in that period, 2 of which could have been easily avoided. Carrigaline’s first goal came from a ball in from our left wing that was not cut out (despite a number of chances to do so) and the ball was shot to the net. The 2nd goal was an excellent goal; a cross from our right wing that was brilliantly converted at the far post. The 3rd goal was a comedy of errors – a corner kick that most of the defending Wilton team had an opportunity to clear, none of which did and the ball ended up in our net.
3-0 down after 15 minutes and playing poorly, the team received some strong words of encouragement at the break. Tiernan Butler who played gamely in the centre of midfield had to retire at this point due to a knee injury.

Wilton responded magnificently in the second period. Carrigaline are a very accomplished side and they pass the ball, create space and work hard for each other. This work rate was matched by Wilton in this period despite suffering another blow when man of the match last week, Eoin Murphy had to retire due to a knee injury. Wilton defended well (as this game was a lot about defending!) but conceded a goal from a free kick when the initial shot was blocked but Carrigaline were faster to the rebound.

The final period saw the Wilton defence of Jack Doherty (in a new role due to injuries), Cian Spicer & William O’Connor playing excellently. In midfield, Ben Gayer was playing in the centre (again a new role because of injuries!) and he battled hard all evening together with Mark Traynor and Kevin Jansson. Up front Sammy Dooley & Cillian McNamara tried to find space with a tight defence. Carrigaline’s star player scored a great goal midway through this period to make the score 5-0.
Towards the end of the game Ben Gayer had a great shot saved by their keeper which would have been a just reward for the team’s efforts in the last 30 minutes of this match.

5-0 was the final score (the offside goal was cancelled out) but the battling and working qualities of the team in the 2nd and 3rd periods has to be admired. There is no doubt that Carrigaline were the better team and deserved victory but not by the margin of the final score; 3-1 would not be unfair to us (especially when you consider the goals we conceded).

Contenders for Man of the Match this week were Ben Gayer for stepping into the centre of midfield when needed, William O’Connor for a solid defensive display (again!) but man of the match this week goes to Cian Spicer for showing the character to battle in defence for 3 periods of a tough encounter and make a telling contribution throughout the game. Well Done Cian!
We wish Tiernan and Eoin speedy recoveries from their injuries.

===================
===================
Carrigaline vs Wilton Wolves
===================
===================

1st Period: The Wolves started strongly with a quick move up the line which resulted in a throw-in, from this Thomas the Tank finished into the bottom corner of the net. Carrigaline responded quickly by shooting which just went wide of “Cathal the stopper” and slid into the back of the net. This brought the confidence back to the home side and they quickly added a second. The Wolves were under pressure but they were hunting the ball down in packs, The wind was taking effect and our usually good passing and shooting was not working as well as normal… something to work on…
Carrigaline were able to turn any possession they had into goals and another long range shot beat the outstretched keeper. 3-1

2nd Period: Wilton dominated possession and a great performance by the Backs and Mid-Field prevented Carrigaline from adding to their tally, Wilton however did not manage to convert their chances with Jinky Jamie, DOS and TW all going close.. some were blaming the silly pitch as passes went astray. No Excuses… AAH… at the end of the period a Gap in Liam the Block’s usually most reliable head as the ball glanced off his head and into the net how unlucky. 4-1

3rd Period: Wilton were getting tired and still not shooting, we need to work on this !!! (Coach talking) Jamie came off to save some energy for the race in the morning. Smurf Sean tried breaking out of defence a few times and did well, strong closing down was done and a return to form for Man of the match Higgi-babie, and nearly converted with a goal in the closing period, However another long shot from Carrigaline meant more misery for the blues. 5-1
Overall a disappointing result but the team tried hard we have to convert the hard work to Goals, Play more as a team and support each-other better, Don’t let some-one else do what you can…. We have to win the next match.

U10 Rockmount 4 Wilton Warriors 3
========================
========================

Wednesday the 4th of May saw the Wilton Warriors travel to Rockmount AFC fortheir second encounter of the season. With Wilton on the back of some solid performances and Rockmount going well in the League, this promised to be a good match for the neutrals.

The match kicked off at 7pm and Rockmount put some good early pressure on the away side. Wilton were extremely unlucky to find themselves a goal down to what can only be described as a freak goal. The ball was launched from the Rockmount defence and managed to take one big bounce into the Wilton goals. Credit to Rockmount, 2 minutes later and their striker picked up the
ball some 15 yards from goal, before slotting a pin point strike into the corner of the net leaving Fionn Kidney in goals with no chance.

As they have done all season, Wilton bounced back showing great spirit and determination. Ben Gayer and Mark Traynor worked the wings with purpose creating some good chances for the hard working strikers upfront of Cillian McNamara and Jack Doherty. Wilton's persistence paid off with Mark Traynor netting a his 2nd of the season just before the break. 2 - 1 to the homeside after 15 minutes.

The 2nd period was action packed with both sides really going for it. Again Wilton can feel unlucky to have found themselves 3-1 down with 20 minutes gone after a quick break from Rockmount. A rapid response from Wilton saw the ever consistent James Scally and Kevin Jannson link up to set Cillian up for a well deserved goa, 3 - 2 ! Shane Murphy, Eoin Murphy and Eoghan Mathers all played brilliantly in Wiltons defence but they could do nothing when out numbered on another quick break from the home side to see them 4-2 down after 25 minutes. Then ,the always dangerous Ben Gayer ran down the the left wing, holding off one marker, beat another two with some stylish foot work before picking his spot with a sweet strike. Easily the best goal in this high scoring affair. 4 - 3 with 15 minutes to go.

The last period saw plenty of more chances, the majority going to Wilton. Cian Spicer had an excellent game at centre back keeping the Rockmount forwards quiet while winning some important headers . Ciaran also put in a fine perfomance at left back by making some strong and brave tackles. Eoin Murphy got a taste of the right midfield and looked like a natural, great
game by him! The clock was against Wilton, final whistle went, 4 - 3 to the home side. A draw woould have been a fair result in my opinion! 7 goal thriller and a great game to watch. Wilton were very unlucky but as always, they played to the final whistle with each and every player giving it their all.

Very difficult to pick Wilton's man of the match this week but Eoin Murphy is this weeks choice. Great performance by him at a new position for him at right midfield, well done Eoin!

U7: Wilton Wildcats 1 St Mary's 1
======================
======================

A continuation of the progress this team has been making recently. Firstly, I must praise the attitude of James and Christian, both of whom performed heroics in goal while also being more than competent outfield players, James a 'Paul Scholes' like midfielder, in passing and tackling and Christian the skillful elusive winger. Back to full strength after the Easter break the Wildcats passing and running game was matched by a similar game from Mary's which made it an entertaining 'end to end' affair. In the first period, Mary's attacks were dealt with the at back by the trio of Ciaran , Eoghan and Finn, their ball winning and passing complimented by the odd no nonsense row z clearance. With Donal having a ding-dong battle with his opposite number in midfield it was up to Paddy , Ben and Matthew to make headway in midfield and link with the front players. Eddie's close control and dribbling skills was causing Mary's endless problems, eventually leading to a goal. Alex and Cameron combined well in the second and third period and were unlucky not to add to the one goal lead.
David added freshness to a midfield that was creaking as St. Mary's stepped up their search for the equalizer which eventually they got. My 'Man of the Match' goes to the defensive unit of Christian, David and Matthew who fought like Lions to keep it at 1-1.

Against a physically bigger Lakewood side, Wilton competed well for large sections of the game. Conor making his debut was the youngest player on the pitch was ably assisted by his joint 'Man of the Match' performing brother, Ben. Eoghan and Finn again proving to be very effective defenders(sky sports slowmo replays proving only 1 of the 3 penalties given against Wilton on the night, being nailed on certainties). Donal, the other joint 'Man of the Match' played very well in both defense and midfield. Paddy was unlucky on the night not to score but his overall play made him a very close contender.
Goals on the night came from Eddie and James and the heavy rain did not dampen The Wildcats enthusiasm to play good football right to the end.

U8 Wilton Wasps: Away to Leeds

Wilton and Leeds both contributed to an exciting, sporting and well fought game with the spoils shared at the end, 1 goal a piece.

Period 1: Wilton started brightly, winning many of the early exchanges across the pitch. David Holland and Philip O'Sulllivan were immense in defence, mopping up everything that came their way. This laid the foundation for our midfield players to push forward, with Brian Ahern being the most effective in this period. Kevin Delaney was causing problems in his role a lone striker. This period finished nil all.

Period 2: With the wind and the hill at Wilton's advantage in this period, they again had the better of their opponents and one felt at times, that just reward for this dominance was not to come. Efforts from Aidan Dunne, James Hannon who was now settling into the game and having a big influence and Eoin Ahern all deserved reward. However cruelly, it was Leeds who made the initial breakthrough. They took the lead through a dubious goal-mouth scrambled effort.
Wilton's competitive drive and determination kicked in and eventually the resultant pressure on Leeds, was rewarded through the trusted left foot of James. Following an in-field pass from Charlie Moran, James teed up a left foot drive from 15 yards which swerved left of their goalie and settled in the top corner, for the equaliser. You could tell James was well pleased with that!
Leeds weren't without further threat themselves in this period, however with Dara Cahill deputising excellently in goals and both Charlie Moran and Eoin working hard across midfield, Wilton kept them at bay. Eoin's 'goal mouth to goal mouth' midfield performance in this period, earns him 'Man of the Match'. At times, he was attempting to score at one end of the pitch and making a superb defensive headed clearance at the other. Roy Keane would have been proud! Aidan was dominating the front line at this stage, fed brilliantly and cleverly by Dara's kick outs and was very unfortunate on one occasion, to see his shot rise just above the crossbar.

Period 3: With the elements to Leeds advantage in this period they relentlessly pressed forward for the winner. However, determined defending and hard work by everyone limited their chances to those from corner kicks. Wilton has their chances too. Jack Doyle lead the front line superbly, as did Kevin Delaney when roles changed. Both held the ball up well for the oncoming support from midfield or alternatively fed the ball into the corners forcing Leeds to turn back and defend. Charlie on the right and Simon Collins on the left flanks were now benefiting from this great work and causing Leeds some problems. The game finished with Wilton's best chance in this period to win the game falling to Simon. His close range angled shot, however, agonisingly struck the foot of the post, following one of his frequent mazy dribbling drives forward.

Well done everyone. Go on now and cause damage in your remaining games and ENJOY!

U10 Wilton Wonders: Home to Youghal

In what proved a very exciting and evenly balanced game, Youghal won out in the end by, 5 goals to 3, their last coming with the last kick of the game.

Wilton got off to the brighter start in the 1st period with Jamie O'Sullivan & Sammy Dooley causing Youghal real problems going forward and Emil, Oran and Gearoid solid in defence. Despite this promising start, Youghal scored first, against the run of play and lead after the first period. The introduction of Thomas White to midfield freed Sammy to move from midfield to the front line and this paid dividends almost immediately, with Robert Murphy setting Sammy through on goals, to bravely score Wilton's equaliser as the goalkeeper advanced. With Luis Halligan & John Casey contributing well down both flanks, Wilton continued to create chances however it was Youghal who once again stole the lead from a well struck free kick which deceived Tom Murphy in goals, who was blinded by a crowded penalty box. Unfortunate for Tom, as he had earlier deprived Youghal, on the few occasions they had shots on goals. Youghal took a 2:1 lead into the next break.

As we've come to expect at this stage, Wilton were not giving up and this fighting spirit and competitive drive were evident from the start of the 3rd period and very quickly paid dividends with two early goals and the lead for the first time in the game. The first was a beauty; a mezzi style run by Jamie, split Youghal's defence and a selfless but wise knock back to Thomas, who had tracked him all the way, resulted in a simple left foot tap in for Thomas. Wilton's 2nd in this period and the 2nd opportunist goal from Sammy in the game, came cursory of a delightful defence splitting pass from Thomas which Sammy calmly slotted away. All credit to Youghal for their fighting come back, an early response cancelled out Wilton's short lived lead. The game was now really hotting up and was there for the taking by either side, with Wilton looking most likely to do so. Jamie was again rampant going forward and Thomas was tracking back like never before. Our defence was coming under increased pressure but Emil, Oran and Gearoid were fighting for every ball. The next few minutes were to prove pivotal. Following yet another surging run forward by Jamie, which looked destined to result in a goal, he was cynically hacked down in the penalty area. Injured but eager, Jamie stepped forward and drilled the penalty shot low to his left, but agonisingly, just wide of the goals. In the next play of the game, Youghal broke through our defence and scored. 1 down rather than 1 up - again sport can be cruel. Wilton pressed 'all out' for the equaliser and on two occasions Robert Murphy, who was driving forward like never before, almost delivered only to be denied by two excellent saves by the Youghal goalkeeper. Wilton's search for the equaliser however left them exposed at the back, allowing Youghal to warp up the game with the last strike of the game.

A brave effort lads and great to see even more improved individual performances. Man of the Match goes to Sammy, goals win you games! Well done, however many others on the night would also have been worthy recipients.

Under10 Wilton Wonders: Away to Corinthians

Wilton put another honest, brave and at many times excellent performance on Thursday evening, however it was a case of déjà vu as we went down 2:1, the same score line as only days earlier against Corinthians, again. And similar to our home defeat, this away defeat was another injustice. Sport can be cruel – particularly when you don’t take the chances that come your way.

Each week, the improved individual performances within this development squad, continue to excite us and are visible to all to see - much more important than the game result!

This was evident in the performance of this game’s ‘Man of the Match’ Emil Varghase. Surely, no opposition player got past him on the night. The ‘game time’ he is benefiting from, is definitely paying dividends. Well done Emil! Emil was not alone though, as Gearoid Murphy also put in a fantastic performance in midfield and centre back. Fionn Kidney, made his outfield debut and did very well, in defence and up front, in the second period. David Cremin produced his best performance to date with some excellent tackling and defensive clearances and also bravely carrying on, for the team, despite getting injured. Our goalkeeper Tom Murphy, again saved ‘our bacon’ on a few occasions and was dependable throughout. We began to see Robert Murphy’s trusted and crafted left foot have an influence on the game, through some excellent passing and corner kicks, one of which lead to Wilton 3rd period equaliser, by Tadhg O'Corrain. Tadhg’s enthusiasm is infectious & energising and he, along with Thomas White, controlled the game at many times, running their hearts out around the pitch and as hinted at earlier, their creative play in particular and all the other performances deserved better - a team victory.

Well done, everyone. Youghal up next - Tuesday next at home!

===================================================================================

Thursday April 21st saw Wilton Warriors host Castleview at the Farranlea grounds for their fourth match of the season. The Wilton coaches had a strong panel of 13 to pick from for this fixture.

The match kicked off at 7.30pm and Wilton got off to a flyer of a start. Wilton's James Scally, Mark Traynor and Ben Gayer were dominating midfield in the first period. With 8 minutes on the clock and the Castleview goal under siege, James Scally let fly with a tremendous strike to leave the away goalkeeper rooted to the ground. One nil to the Warriors. Wilton were extremely tight at the back with Cian Spicer and Shane Murphy dealing with the Castleview threat with ease. Shane's reading of the game is second to none this season. Meanwhile, Wilton's other full back, Eoghan Mahers was linking up with Ben Gayer on the left wing as if they have been playing together for years. The left footed duo gave a masterful display on how to use the wing to create space. First period over, Wilton go in at the break one up and the home side looking well on top.

Castleview slowly made their mark on the game by creating some good early chances in the 2nd period and on the 20th minute, they drew level. Ciaran O'Driscoll who had another superb game in goals, could do nothing about this angled drive. The 2nd period was all about Mark Traynor who tormented the Castleview defence, creating chance after chance for Kevin Jansson and Cillian McNamara up front. Mark was rewarded for his hard work with a well taken goal just before the break to give Wilton a 2-1 lead.

Castleview came back into the game with a wave of attacks. On the 35th minute, a well delivered cross into the Wilton box was met with a brave header from Cian Spicer who was desperatley unlucky to see his effort go past Ciaran in goals. Cian showed great character after this by making some important blocks and putting in a great performance at centre half. Then with 5 minutes to go a piece of skill that Pele himself would have been proud of, James Scally, with a delicate chip over the Castleview defender, controlled the ball on his knee before he smashed a volley with his left foot. The away keeper did very well to hang onto this shot. 2 goals a piece on the final whistle, GREAT GAME!!!

Jack Doherty and Cillian McNamara were unlucky not to get on the score sheet after testing the keeper with some fine efforts, playing their best match this season. Also, John Casey, William O' Connor and Eoin Murphy all put in superb shifts this afternoon.
But the Wilton "Man of the Match" this week goes to Mark Traynor with a dazzling exhibition down the right wing. Well played Mark!!!

U9 Lakewood 2 : Wilton Wolves 2 (by Sean Murphy)

In the first period it was even enough. With only one or two chances - the closest from Lakewood hitting the crossbar.
But great defending by both teams.
Wilton started strongly in the second period with Eoghan getting a goal a few minutes after tip off. Lakewood weren't long equalizing.
Runs up the wing by sneaky Seán and jinky Jamie. Great defending by lanky Liam.The second period finished.....1-1.
The third period saw Lakewood take a 2-1 lead. However, Wilton didn't give up and got another goal from Thomas. It was
probably because of the mothers cheering at the side, if we got them skirts they would start to dance.
Wilton almost got a winner but didn't. It finished....2-2. I'm giving Daragh ''man of the match'' for his deadly play which caused Lakewood trouble all day.

U7 Wilton Wildcats, at Home on 20th April : Wilton 4 Carrigaline 3

What another great game from the lads in this age bracket, the result reflecting their great attitude and ever improving passing game. Christian performed heroics despite reporting for duty under the weather, the team also had to rely on Alex the youngest squad member to provide cover and he set up 2 great scoring opportunities in the second period. Finn, David and James showed why the defense is the backbone of the side. Cameron and James provided a balance in midfield, James chipping in with a goal. Two players, Donal & Ciaran were just a shade ahead of the pack on the night. Donal's powerful running from goal to goal and good passing marked him out as one of the dominant players on the field. However, the 'Man of the Match ' performance to Ciaran who contributed 2 goals on the night and had a hand in a third . A great performance in what was an excellent team performance.

Under 9 Wilton Wizards 1 : Leeds 4

A terrific match and much closer than the final scoreline of 4-1 in favour of Leeds suggests. The first period saw Max make excellent saves, with Dorian and Emma thwarting most attacks. Alexander and Dylan tackled ferociously in mid-field and linked well with the two forwards Morgan and Andrew, but neither team could score. Unfortunately, the second period revealed an early dominance by Leeds with three quick goals. Sreshtu cleared his defensive line whenever he could whilst Michael ran his heart out in mid-field. A swift attack lead to Andrew scoring Wilton's only goal. This set the game up nicely for the final period. Despite a very close contest with ferocious tackling, Leeds scored an undeserved final goal.

===================================================================================

Wilton Wrestlers: Away to Ballinhassig

An understrength Wilton Wrestlers team, missing some of their influential players, faced a full strength and well organised Ballinhassig team and were up against from the start. Despite this they put in a battling performance throughout the game. Strong performances across the team throughout the game however were not enough and they were on the wrong end of the result by the end, with most of the damage being done in the final period of the game. A great 2nd period goal from Darragh Cahill and a solid performance throughout, earns him Wilton's 'Man of the Match' nomination. The extremely encouraging positive from the game, was the team's 'never say die' attitude and their work rate, right to the bitter end. They all showed true character, well done all!

===================================================================================

U9 Division 1. Springfield Ramblers 3 : Wilton Wolves 3

1st Period: Springfield started very strongly by passing and moving as a team very well, they soon converted this strong start by placing a goal into the bottom corner. Wilton created a few chances but none were converted, Wilton were also hindered by an injury to their all-star keeper Cathal the Stopper Hynes. 0-1

2nd Period: Wilton soon woke up and had a strong start by Daniel Braveheart with a shot which scorched the top of the net… Jinky Jamie started to have an influence on the game making runs up and down the side-line and scoring into the bottom corner. Wilton was gaining control. However Ramblers sneaked a goal which beat the out-stretched super-sub Seanie “look I can Fly” keeper. Injuries kept coming as Jamie, Thomas and Eoghan all sustained injuries; Mind you the injuries seemed worse when we were defending…2-2

3rd Period: Started quickly and Wilton were now on form, Great play in mid-field by Joe quick feet Higgins, hot foot Hynes and surging runs by Thomas the Tank. Great defending with a “Man of the Match” performance was shown by Liam “The Block” Drico and Jack at the back. This platform gave the attackers the room they needed and Jinky Jamie added a second to put the Wolves ahead for the second time in the game. The Mothers threatening cheerleaders outfits for the next game were having heart-attacks at this stage. However more woe was to follow when a lovely rambling passing move resulted in the match being tied again. There still was Time for one last chance which someone not mentioning any names ... got their feet mixed up and could not convert “he’ll be a great defender someday…” A Great game of football enjoyed by all. Still un-beaten in Division One, Lakewood will be sunk… on Wednesday!! 3-3

===================================================================================

U10 Wilton Wonders 1 : Corinthians 2

In their second encounter of the campaign, Wilton faired extremely well, only marginally losing out to Corinthians. The teams performance and more tellingly some individual player's performances, improved enormously. Corinthians started more brightly and scored an early well taken goal. Wilton nevertheless, lead by the tenacious tackling and extreme focus of the captain for the day and the coaches choice for 'Man of the Match' Oran O'Sullivan, quickly got into their stride and created some good chances up front, through some great combination play and surging runs from Joseph Higgins and Cathal Hynes.

Wilton dominated possession in the second period, demonstrated by the honest effort and some good play from Gearoid Murphy in midfield. Rory Duggan was very secure in goals and his distribution to his team mates was excellent - accuracy with urgency, when needed. The ever improving Emile broke up the few attacks Corinthian's had, down his wing in the second period and Liam O'Driscoll kept the defensive unit well organised and Neil Cotter's introduction at the start of the period, added greater steel and penetration down the right wing. Eventually, Wilton dominance was rewarded with the 'goal of the game' and Wilton's equaliser. Joseph and Thomas, both always a threat when attacking , linked up brilliantly and Thomas finished off well, Joseph's assist.

In the third period, a lapse of concentration allowed Corinthians an early lead goal and buoyed by this, they got back into the game. Wilton's midfield stemmed the tide of this early Corinthians pressure, through the committed tackling of both David Cremin and Jack Long. As a result, Wilton once again became the more threatening team going forward and had there been just a bit more composure on the ball at critical times, they would certainly have equalised again and perhaps gone on to secure the win.

Overall, it was a very exciting and close encounter between two evenly matched teams. Well done, all !

=================================================================================

U10 League 1 - Mallow 2 : Wilton Warriors 0

On Sunday, April 17th, Wilton Warriors travelled to Mallow for their League 1 match.

Overall the game was a tough encounter between two evenly matched teams. Wilton started brightly and were in control, for the first period. The defence was well organised with Shane Murphy (having a great campaign), Cian Spicer & Eoghan Mathers dealing with all things that came their way, Ciaran O’Driscoll in goal easily coping with anything that got past the defence. Throughout this period the team’s passing, support play, communication and calling for the ball resulted in them playing some of the best football we have seen to date in the league.
Wilton pressed but could not unlock the Mallow defence despite the best efforts of all, James Scally in particular playing a major role ably supported in midfield by Mark Traynor and Ben Gayer. Up front Jack Doherty & Cillian McNamara found clear chances hard to come by.

The second period continued with a very even contest. William O’Connor came on to make a strong contribution at right back. After 10 minutes of the second quarter Mallow broke the deadlock with a lucky goal. A move down their right wing found the ball going across the box to be turned into the Wilton net for a very lucky goal. Wilton continued to play good football and Ben Gayer linked well with Sammy Dooley, who together with Kevin Jansson worked hard to get back on level terms.

The third period was played out with few chances coming to either side. Mallow scored a second goal after 5 minutes (one which looked offside to most Wilton supporters, the most educated in the league!). A well worked free kick saw Shane Murphy having a great shot on goal saved by the Mallow goalkeeper, who looked very assured throughout. Good work by James Scally (all evening), Sammy Dooley & Cillian McNamara failed to yield a score.

A 2-0 score line certainly flattered the home side but Wilton continues to play good football in this campaign and the team will benefit from playing against the better teams in the League.
The man of the match this week goes to James Scally for his tireless work in the middle of the park helping the defence and supporting the forwards in an excellent display.

Onto Castleview next Thursday, another tough assignment!

U9 : Wilton Wizards 1 : Fermoy 7

It was a thrilling game from start to finish with an improved performance from Wilton. Andrew O'Connor put Wilton ahead with a great strike after great work in the midfield. Despite excellent goalkeeping from Emma, Fermoy cranked up the pressure and showed their superiority with several strikes on goal. Michael and Dorian stood firm in defence holding back wave after wave of attack whilst Cian and Dylan worked hard to link up with the forwards. Morgan was denied a superb chance on goal when he was cruelly tackled from behind but the subsequent free-kick came to nothing. Alexander tried his best with his trusty left boot and Max threatened to break out of midfield but Fermoy managed to get enough numbers back to protect their lead. Despite gelling well as a team, Fermoy ran out deserving winners 7 -1.

========================================================================

U7 : Rockmount 2 : Wilton Wildcats 3

A storming 1st period performance saw Wilton go 3 up with a brace from Eddie and 1 from Donal. A save from Christian (a candidate for save of the season already) kept Rockmount off the score sheet. Rockmount got into their rhythm in the second period and scored 2 goals despite the best efforts of Cameron and Matthew. Debutant's Ben and James had excellent first outings with Eoghan The Rock making 1 or 2 vital interceptions. Cameron's committed tackling and running gets him this week's Man of the Match.

========================================================================

U8 : Wilton Wrestlers 2 : Ringmahon 6

A huge improvement on the previous week's performance could not prevent the Wrestlers going under to a skillful Ringmahon side. 0-0 at the end of the 1st period was a fair reflection of the game at that stage, Dara and Sean playing key roles in defence. The second period proved to be one of all out attack by both sides, Rory and Brian impressing. Rory and David scoring. Wilton spent most of the third period chasing the game with Jack's defensive work getting him the nod for this week's Man of the Match.

========================================================================

U8 : Douglas Hall 1 : Wilton Wrestlers 0

The Wrestlers fought hard on a very hot day and while playing very well and improving all the time, narrowly lost out to Douglas Hall by the only goal of the game scored in the 2nd period. James O'Connell's performance, for the second week running, shone brightly in defence while Marton Wiegandt had a very good game in midfield. The coach's 'Man of the Match' nomination however goes to Daniel Delee who produced an impressive performance in goals reminiscent of his fathers performances in his playing days.
Ballinhassig away, presents your next challenge!

========================================================

U9 : Wilton Wolves 2 : Carrigaline 2

Carrigaline stole a point at home to the Wilton Wolves, scoring a late equaliser in a thrilling game.

The Wolves started fantastically with Jamie giving a 'Man of the Match' performance in the 1st period particularly and scored a super goal, into the bottom left hand corner, as well. Thomas, with a powerful close range strike which was too hot for their goalkeeper to handle, added a 2nd goal and Wilton finished the 1st period 2 goals in front. We could have and should have doubled that lead in the 2nd period with close efforts coming from Darragh, Eoghan and Sean and solid displays by many. The midfielders and defenders played a stellar 1st and 2nd period keeping Carrigaline at bay and a clean sheet.
Carrigaline, to their credit, fought back in the 3rd period, buoyed on by an early well taken goal. Some excellent defending by all kept Carrigaline at bay, demonstrated none better than Joseph with his Paul McGrath like 'body on the line' block, which certainly prevented an equaliser. The equaliser did come however in the last minute and Carrigaline left for home, feeling rather fortunate. We learned alot on Saturday - A match isn't over til it's over. On a positive note we tried players in new positions. Carrigaline won't know what hit them when we meet them next.
Well done again, lads. Keep it up and enjoy! Springfield away, are up next.
